"Are natural disasters a sign of the times?" -- Yes, says WT

yes, bible prophecies suggest that there would be disasters during “the conclusion of the system of things,” or “the last days.” (matthew 24:3; 2 timothy 3:1) for example, concerning our time, jesus said: “there will be food shortages and earthquakes in one place after another.” (matthew 24:7).

that from their website this morning.. i see how they've morphed (by interpretation) food shortages and earthquakes into virtually all bad happenings today.. i'll bet if the "blue bonnet" (one elder's fractured pronunciation of bubonic during a public talk, using it not once but three times) plague, one of which happened nearly 700 years ago -- was going on today, it would be a sign of the times.

after all, it "caused the death of 60% of the population of europe".. no natural devastation like that seen since..

i bring this up now because i haven't seen any postings about that practice because i got out in 1977. when did wt quit soliciting private homes for accomodations?

or have they stopped?.

i hated it, but it was the only way we could afford to go.

Thought it was a ploy to actually get a foot in the door, make an impact.

My thoughts, exactly.

Why the "rooming work" ceased seems unknown for sure. Probably some legal reasons embedded somewhere, or possibilites of potential violence from either party -- hey, I used to hitchhike wherever I wanted to go before I got my first automobile but I see none of that today.

At one circuit assembly in Des Moines, it had to be January, 1960. After the sessions, we navigated to our private home, and settled in. There, after turning out the lights my wife and I began to have sex in the spare bedroom where a nice older man had accomodated us.

The bed loudly crashed to the floor as the slats beneath the box springs had slipped out of place because of our vigorous activity.

Talk about embarrassment! We hurriedly got our naked bodies out of bed, put things together again, and resumed what we had started. I believe we conceived our first child that night.

Next morning at breakfast, the nice man never mentioned the loud crash.

I hated it, but it was the only way we could afford to go. At New York in 1958 I was a 17 year old, lodging in some strange apartment while my parents were at a different home miles away. I can't remember the price but it was probably around $1 a night.

Any experiences you'd like to share?

so it was brought up lately that my lack of faith is partially do to stories in the bible like the one in samuel where god kills david’s first born son.

the excuse i heard today wasn’t that god killed david’s son no he just didn’t bless him so then he died.

Let me get this straight -- God did not perform an abortion here; he waited until the child was born before he killed him, letting the offender live.

I can see that kind of justice holding up in a modern court of law -- NOT!

i'm now on medicare and collecting social security.

I went into a deep depression when I first read that article, having been baptized for some 14 years. I knew it was wrong for WT to run ahead with prophetic stuff like that. A kind elder came to visit me trying to console me. That humans were writing the Watchtower. That I needed to wait on Jehovah.

And I resumed in believing that crap for another 8 years.

Hey, SadElder. They tale reminds me of attending a wedding shower at a city park (Lake Atalanta, Rogers, AR) quite a few years ago. The bride-to-be's father, an elder in the Springdale cong at the time, was so drunk that two of the brothers had to grab him by each arm and escort him to one of their vehicles -- taking him home.

There were no public announcements.

By today's JW standards, Solomon could find himself in the Kingdom Hall's back room, answering to some judicial committee.

'Unhappily, however, like the values of so many leaders today, Solomon’s values eventually changed. The Bible account reads: “He came to have seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives gradually inclined his heart. And it came about in the time of Solomon’s growing old that his wives themselves had inclined his heart to follow other gods; and his heart did not prove to be complete with Jehovah his God like the heart of David his father.” '—1 Kings 11:3, 4. Awake! 2003, 6/8 p. 9

Then, again -- by today's JW standards, Solomon will probably be resurrected.

'What happened to Solomon when he died? The Bible answers: “The days that Solomon had reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel were forty years. Then Solomon lay down with his forefathers, and was buried in the City of David his father.” (1 Kings 11:42, 43) Hence, it seems reasonable to conclude that Solomon is in Sheol, or Hades, from which he will be resurrected.' The Watchtower, 2005, 7/15, p. 31

Watchtower reasons his destiny based on the expression, "Solomon lay down with his forefathers".

Sounds fair to me: haul him into the back room for the practice of egregious transgressions -- then resurrect him.

Let's Talk Horror Movies

horror is easily my favourite genre of movie so i just thought i'd start a thread on it.. horror can be done badly and there are plenty of crap horror movies, no doubt about that.

but horror can also be done very well, too - often on a low budget.. plus, there are quite a lot of subgenres - slasher, supernatural, monster movies, body horror, psychological horror, zombie, vampire, etc.. so, do you like horror?.

what's your favourite subgenre?.

We watched The Bad Seed last week.

"The Bad Seed is a 1956 American psychological horror-thriller film with elements of melodrama and film noir, directed by Mervyn LeRoy and starring Nancy Kelly, Patty McCormack, Henry Jones, and Eileen Heckart."

The B&W video had very good quality despite its age.

Excellent performances by all, even Jesse White, "the Maytag Repairman" -- the loneliest guy in town.
